Use cases

You have received a TestArchitect installer package, and may be uncertain of exactly what you need to do to install TestArchitect in the correct manner. It’s very important to have TestArchitect installed properly to avoid unexpected issues.

You may find yourself in one of the following scenarios:

  1. Your existing TestArchitect version is an older official release (e.g., version 8.0), and you want to use a newer official release (e.g., version 8.1).
  2. Your existing TestArchitect installation is an older, custom-made version and you want to use a newer custom-made TA build.
  3. Your existing TA version is a TestArchitect official release, and you need to install an upgrade build that fixes some issues.
  4. You are using a TestArchitect official release and you need to install a custom build, such as one that supports custom or third-party control(s) in your application under test.

Follow the instructions below to learn how to install TestArchitect in the proper manner.

Solution

Begin by backing up your TestArchitect repositories

  1. Check-in all items (test modules, interfaces, actions, etc.) in all your TestArchitect projects.
  2. Export all repositories to a backup.

The following steps must be performed on TestArchitect Client machines as well as any machines hosting TestArchitect Repository Server installations to which the TestArchitect Clients connect. This ensures that all connected TestArchitect Clients and Repository Servers are of the same TestArchitect version.

Uninstalling the current TestArchitect build

Note: Skip this step if your current TestArchitect version (e.g., 8.1.0.132) is the same as the version of the TestArchitect main build in the delivery package.

  1. It is recommended that you use Control Panel  Uninstall a program to uninstall the TA application.
  2. After uninstalling, check <installation path>\LogiGear (by default, it’s C:\Program Files\LogiGear). Sometimes, files in this directory tree are being used by other applications, preventing the InstallShield wizard from removing them completely. So if the LogiGear folder still exists, please delete it manually. (Please note that this may not be possible until after you’ve performed a system restart, to release any locks that may be on the files.)

Installing a TestArchitect main build (official release)

Note: Skip this step if your current TestArchitect version (e.g., 8.1.0.132) is the same as the version of the TestArchitect main build in the delivery package.

Install the TestArchitect main build provided in the delivery package. The name of the file is in the format TestArchitect_<version>_<bit-width>bit.exe. (For example, TestArchitect_8.1.4.149_64bit.exe.)

Installing a TestArchitect upgrade/custom build (if any)

After installing the main build, please install the TestArchitect upgrade build that is provided in the delivery package. The name of the file is in the format TestArchitectUpgrade_<version>_<bit-width>bit.exe”. (For example: TestArchitectUpgrade_81.4.10.149_64bit.exe.)

Important note

The TestArchitect Client and any Repository Server which Client connects to must be of the same TestArchitect version.
